Ok, my 97 TJ sport has the much sought after D35c rear axle. It also has a 4.0 engine. Now my "dream" is to run 33" tires. I know that would involve regearing and such. But what would be the way to go. Now remember that I have a limited amount of money to put into this project. I could always go with Super35 axles and a Detroit. Now I have thought about the Ford 8.8 with rear disk brakes. Yes it is still a c-clip but I think that there is a c-clip eliminator kit available. As far as lockers I really haven't looked into that area. You also have to remember that I have no welder or welding skills or even a garage. I don't want to go to a shop and pay out the wallet for the work. I know Paul has done this kind of work and I know that it would be worthwhile to drive down there for it. What are everyones thoughts on this? I'm not doing anything soon just trying to figure it all out. I do realize that I would need a new driveshaft, calipers usually don't come with the axle when you get it and there are a lot of little things that also have to be done, e-brake and such.

I would...
A. Sell the TJ to Chris for $500 as-is.
B. Get a D44 out of a wrecked TJ. Can't find one? Wreck one!
C. Get a FS Wagoneer D44 and stick it in there.
D. See A above.

Forget the super 35, it only adresses 2 of the many weak points of the 35. Look for a TJ 44 to swap in, may cost ya a bit, but will be the easiest to do yourself with no welding involved. Next is the 8.8. Should be able to find one cheap in a bone yard. It should come with brakes, if not get a pair out of the boneyard so ya can get new ones without paying a core charge. Dont worry about it being a c clip axle. C clips dont fail because the only stress they see is retaining the axle. The bad juju surrounding c clip axles stems form the weak 35 that spits out shafts on a regular basis. Paul should have no trouble with this swap, if he has time. The hardest part will be aligning your stock 35 brackets on the new housing so that your pinion angle works out right, and even that isnt that big a deal.

Its all about full width so you don't loose as much Center of gravity as stock width axles  60 and a 14 bolt |

The CJM needs a TJ. I don't know, I mean getting $550 a month is good. And what do you mean you can't put food on the table? Don't you have one of them government/civilian jobs? Well I know where I could get a TJ D44 but the individual who owns the Jeep might be mad. I think you guys are right though with trying to get a TJ D44, it's a bolt in. The 8.8 is a lot of fab work, one can still be had for under $300 but then you start adding everything else to the bill. I guess I could start playing the lottery so if I can win, I can buy Chris some new "shoes" and food and then get a ProRock 60. HA! Jonathan It is usually helpful to ask others what if, they are usually thinking more clearly. Now Chris, when I wreck a TJ with a D44, how do explain that to the police. I was hearing voices? |

Its all about full width so you don't loose as much Center of gravity as stock width axles 60 and a 14 bolt Or I could drag an anchor behind the TJ. Full width huh? I don't want it to look like FRANKENJEEP. |

you can find an 8.8 at UWI for under $100; just have to find someone to set it up.

Ok... I've been holding off on this one to see where it would lead. I guess I'm wondering, with that neat 44 in the rear, all beefed up, whatcha going to put up front? Another alternative would be to go with MTR 31's and a 2" lift for now, slap a No-slip in the 35, be careful with the silly pedal (easy for me to say with my brute force 4 banger), and amaze all your friends with what that lil' Jeep and your driving expertise can do.  By the way... these guys are trying to take advantage of you! Since you're a fellow TJ owner and all, I'll give you 600... AND come get it so you don't have to pay shipping! ;D |

You need to hold off on that one til he's a teenager! ;D (Don't listen to him, Jonathan... only I can give the TJ a truly good home, not put out to pasture in some bogus museum deal. Actually I am running 31's right now with a 2" BB but my rear springs aint what they used to be. Of course you have a 4cyl., I have a 6cyl. but just ask Chris, as he told me at CJ5 hill, I let my mind tell me that I couldn't make it. Don't know if I really want to drop money into the 35 at least not right now. As for up front, a non-vac D30 out of a XJ, 88 and up I believe which would be a high pinion and reverse cut which should be stronger. Or I guess I could do what Mike (White TJ, broken at Shoe Creek) did, his new axles are 60% stonger than stock, he was going to get the ones that are 80% stronger and now he said he is going to get a Detroit. Anyone want an ARB? He asked me if I was locked. Told him nope, running open-open and, lockers are for girl thingys. Kinda got a funny look but it's really I can't afford one right now. |

Of course you have a 4cyl., I have a 6cyl. but just ask Chris, as he told me at CJ5 hill, I let my mind tell me that I couldn't make it. Chris is the Jedi Knight of 4 wheeling. He's told me the same thing... "feel the force, young Luke... aim for that special rock... don't look for it, just feel it", and, ya know what? It finally worked! ;D Seriously, put a lunchbox locker in there, and good meats, then "feel the force". The No-Slip is $399 pretty much anywhere and no sweat to put in, and the MT/R's made ALL the difference for me. Actually, that and Chris' good advice about what line to take. Lyle (I conquered CJ5 hill... right in front of you, and was VERY happy) P. ($676?) |

Where is this mythical CJ5 hill you speak of? Man I've been out of the loop for a while. Best trail to speak of last time I wheeled down there was the skidmore spurr (Ask Scott Steen about the fun there ;D). I really have to make it down there to play.
And Jonathan, I'm shifting to Lyle's side on this one. Throw a locker in there if you must, but just wheel the wee out of it while saving your pennies to do the axles, lift, tires and gears all at once. I had to wait till mine was paid off to afford it, but it went some amazing places with 31's on it.
$677 hope I win the bidding, I really need to abuse one of them round spring heeps. ;D

dang instead of all the headaches of fitting/welding finding special parts, just put a WARN full floater axle kit in there. Put one in a wrangler last year and the guy has beaten the jeep to death but the full floater lives on. He runs 35" TSL's, kind of pricey but isn't everything. Pat and I both have em in our CJ's and speaking for myself I really like the setup. With that setup you can run 33's with no problem at all, at least the drive axles breaking that is. Now the rest of the driveline, well there is always something.  tim |
