So your buying a tranny from Novak? What kind of pricing are they offering. I remember when building the SM 465 true they have the bearings, seals and blocking rings aka synchros. Not so much on the hard parts as in the picture. You can see the common damage on the muncie series tranny here. 2nd Gear and the slider were badly worn, wouldn't stay in gear very well if at all. These are the kind of parts that Craig is refering to. Also the SM 420 is a noisy transmission too. But an awesome first gear ratio. Should be a very stout jeep when you get it all done.... tim

Good luck on your transmission swap. 0.3" isn't a whole lot of length (but if you read the words and not the pictures, they are the same length? ), and there isn't that huge a difference in how much ground clearance you're going to have, that I know of. Are the post D-C takeover of AMC 2.5s the same as the old Iron Duke 151/AMC 2.5s as far as bellhousing bolt patterns? If so, you could probably get a bellhousing from someone who just got rid of their Iron Duke 151/2.5 from their CJ or look for the bellhousing in a junkyard and save some money. IIRC, the SM420, SM465, NP432, T18/19 should bolt up with little to no modifications involved (?). I wish someone made the 'opposite' adapter so I could bolt up any one of those to a Ford 2.8/2.9/4.0 V6.... but I'd probably opt for an NV4500 or ZF 5-speed, depending on how things would fit. I wouldn't want my front shaft very much shorter than it is now on either of my BIIs. Again, hope all goes well with this swap Dave G

Yea pricing is a key point and yes im getting the turn key set up. The person i talked to, Ryan, has just about the same setup in his jeep that i will have and said the rear drive shaft is 3/4 inch longer after the swap. And that the gears and stuff will be replaced if need be and they will send me photos of everything if i want and i can have them fix anything i want for it. Oh and they are giving me a discount so its gonna be about 1500 shipped to my house.
Gee i wonder if i will ever drive her again?
Today we got the sye installed in the t case. Very nice fit.

ok well im still stuck on this problem of deciding wether or not to get the sm420 tranny or tires and some other stuff. what do yall think. I keep thinking that since i have the money and seeing that the fluid that came out of my AX5 was nise and milky white i would be really upset if i bought tires and some other goodys and then ended up needing a tranny soon. Help with the decision. Also looking at a 16 ft trailer.

Keep the tires you have, keep the tranny you have, keep the money you have. Put some of that money into a trailer, and put the rest into the gas tank. Where can't that Jeep go right now, as is? OK, I thought of one more thing. Get a muffler for that truck of yours.

He has an extremely good point and he's usually right. That transmission you are looking at is great, and it is a good price, but it's way overkill. I bet your transmission lasts longer than your front axle, and I also bet it's cheap to overhaul to last another 10 years. Get a trailer, no matter what you build there will come a time you'll need it, and it will always be useful to you. Then if you feel the need later on, get some Qs. You have a Jeep that is right now in its current state, more capable than you have been willing to push it.

Stop talking like that. You should fix your Jeep when it breaks, not before. Finish the axle swap, put some gas in it, and go wheeling. We'd much rather look at wheeling pictures than photos of junk, in pieces, on the workbench or garage floor. I can go into my garage and see that.

You have a workbench? I thought it was a parts shelf.

Josh take it from the guy that as of late say the last 10 years drives his junk to every trail ride and uses it as a daily driver. Flush the tranny put some royal purple in it, finish the axle swap and drive the crap out of it. Go buy yourself the trailer because as everyone has stated before you will need it. No matter how well you build it you will still need a trailer. Trust me the folks in this club have bailed me out on more than one occasion. Listen to us for once. Go get a good trailer and a normal exhaust and enjoy. Just because you have the money doesn't mean you have to spend it.

What would an ax15 out of a junkyard cost ya? Do you think you could swap it out overnight in a parking lot? If you're wanting to drive your jeep places what is going to be the engine rpm with the new tranny at highway speed? With the changes you have completed so far I suggest you bank the cash and wheel the bugs out, then you can see what you don't like or what doesn't work, change that. A jeep is never finished until you run out of money, make sure your changes work.
