I have found some new motivation to help finish an old build. The 82 CJ-7 is in rough condition... The engine has been built to circle track specs... so trail rides and rock crawling will be sacrificed... (For now). The transmission was a T18 granny but I have decided to go with a TH350... I'm trying to score one for free or for dirt cheap. If I can't get one for cheap and without major internal issues then I'll purchase a performance TH350 and be done with it. The Transfercase will be a 203/205 combo... I just scored a complete NP203 from Pick-n-Pull for roughly $150. Everything looks clean it shifts smoothly and the chain feels tight... Not a bad score. I never realized how heavy these T-Cases are until I went to put it in the wheel barrel.. I'm not sure the weight but it's heavy. The TH350 that it was attached to was freshly rebuilt as all of the internals were clean!! Too bad somebody destroyed the housing removing the motor... The axles.... I still have the HD D44 under the front and the D60 in the rear... I have a d60 front and FF14 bolt with 5.13's but I am uncertain if I want to use these for this project seeing that I won't be doing too much crawling etc... (This will be a last minute decision). The suspension is SOA but the rear will have a 4 link and some coilovers. Tires/Rims... I have some H1 12 bolt beadlocks and for ease sake I'll be using the Goodyear military tires. I'll post some pictures of her as she sits and once I am healed from my surgery I'll post the beginnings to the end.... So, until then I'll be collecting parts once again... lol.

Yes sir! Denis Anderson's place and the Tough Truck Challenge... Put the skinny to the floor and get some. After that motor is done I'll most likely jump up to a big block...

Going to be looking forward to see the outcome of this revived project, Rich I say build a mud runner for now, and when the motor goes, get an old AMC 258/4.2, GM 250/4.1, Ford 240, or Ford 300/4.9 and build a crawler ;D What surgery are you going to be having, if I dare ask? Dave G EDIT: Nevermind on the surgery question, just read your other post in the wanted to buy section. Take it easy and let that thing heal correctly. Good luck and hope the recoup/recovery goes well for ya man P.S. What are your plans for that T-18 and which one is it, Jeep or Ford, I forget?

After this AMC motor I will steer away from the AMC power plants and go with a Big Block... Either chevy/buick/olds or pontiac... Basically Whatever will bolt up to the TH350... I'd like to build the TH350 to handle up to and over 600hp.... (for when I drop the BB in)... I have to figure the cost of building the tranny to handle that kind of power... I'm sure it'll be cheaper to build one than to buy one... I found a couple that would handle that kind of power for under $1000... Who knows though... hehehe Mudrat (Pat) is first inline... It's a Jeep T18 granny... Chances are the D20 will go with it.

W/ your tranny plans, why start with the 350? I'd think a 400 or 727 would be a heavier duty tranny to start with and should pose no issues when you go to a BB. Also I'd look into a full manual reverse valve body (greater control, strong, and easy to go from 1 to R in a hurry which is great if the front end starts coming up on climbs).
What are you thinking for the BB? I've always liked the ford 460s 'cause its so easy to stroke them to huge cubes, but you can buy a turn key 572 Chevy too ....
With that much power on tap, I'd try to keep the center of gravity as low as possible too.
Enjoy.

Hmm. I guess I can understand not wanting to fool with AMC engines. No worries on the T-18, I'd prefer a Ford transmission (T-18/19 or NP-435) for a possible idea I have for a project. I guess if all you're going to do is mud bogs, a BB engine is fine. I see no reason to go much larger than a SBC 350 or 400 unless you plan on putting that thing up like a monster truck.

ADAM: The TH350 is a strong/short tranny... they're a dime a dozen, there are tons in the junkyards and If I decided to splurge again I can get one fully built to easily handle 600+hp for $1350. I'd like to go with a late 60's Buick or olds BB, 425/430/455 etc... from the factory they came with roughly 375hp and nearly 500ft-lbs of torque... My buddy has a Pontiac 400 sitting in his garage... might go that route if I can get it for free.... If I go Chevy, it'll be a 454 or 496 ... She'll be decent for the center of gravity... I'll use the 42's for the mud and the 37's for the rocks/road... The 82 is getting a 4 link for the rear so I'll be able to play around with the height a little. DAVE: Jeep T18 granny to the Ford T18 granny is like comparing apples to oranges... My bell housing bolts either ford or jeep so I see no preference. The 435 is a nice tranny... but, I'm going with an auto... so that's not even in my thoughts. You'll never understand until you do it... I like the BB torque at ridiculously low rpms... and if I feel like playing leap frog from one rock to the next what better way to do so than with a BB... hehehe

Rich, if only I still had my '76 Olds 98.... I'd sell you the 455 out of it That thing had a lot of low-end torque, and when you 'got 'er up on glass' at 75 and up, she just floated along. I just don't think I'll ever get to the point where I'd want to feed that much engine ever again, though! Good luck on this project, sounds like it's going to be interesting! Dave G

Well, I finished tearing into the D60... It was a typical north eastern axle... as the exterior had rust flaking off from the housing... the seals leaked grease which collected in all the common areas.. Man... years of caked grease, dirt and grim... The last couple of days I have been scraping, chipping, wire brushing, spraying carb and choke cleaner. Repeat that a couple of times... and I am getting closer to the primer stage... I'm not worried about the exterior being all smooth... if there are pits here and there.... no biggie! The king pins, bushing and spings looked new... There wasn't any slop in the knuckle... I'm still going to replace the bushings, springs etc etc... I should have some pictures with in a day or two. Up-Date: Trying to find replacement parts for the Kingpins... One would think that these parts were available locally. With that being said... Does anybody know where I can find replacement parts for the kingpins?... ie: Bushings, Springs, Gaskets and Seals... Another Up-Date: Well, I decided to order two D60 Kingpin Rebuild kits from 4WDFACTORY.COM... I have to say those guys are great, talked to "Joey" and he laid it out plain and simple... 2 kits for $126.00 to my door. Man, they have some niiiiice goodies... Here are some basic before and partially done pics... lol. I still have to grind the welds on the passenger perch as well as that factory bracket on the bottom... Don't mind the gray... that's only primer, 3 coats... Black/Orange will be the theme for the axles/tranny/t-case... I'm thinking about having my buddy paint the Jeep Black or OD green

Not much process has been made... The Ford D60 has been gone through.. new kingpins, bushings, bearings, seals and gaskets... The u-joints feel good and tight so I'm not too worried about them... I have new ones in the box.... The calipers and pads are still in their boxes... I have to weld the perch on, install the brakes order 3" wheel spacers and purchase new warn hubs... lol. Then she'll be ready. She's painted and looking Chevy Good... lol. Here is a picture of the axle 90% done... I took apart the 2 free Th350's... and both of them have nice parts inside... shift kits, springs etc... I ordered the racing master rebuild kit... and another Shift kit that offers 4 different picks... from basic to street/strip to full competition... This picture is of the two TH350's mostly torn apart. This tranny was defintely built stronger than the other tranny... and this tranny had the Hurst Hot Shift 2 Shift kit (Thanks Jesse). Well.... After doing a mock-up of the 203/205 doubler I decided against that route... ... TH350 = 23" + Tranny to T-case adapter = 1" + The NP203 Reduction Box = 6" + 203/205 adapter = 3" + NP205 T-Case = 13" which roughly equals 46" of length... Which would leave me with a short, short drive-shaft.... Say anywhere from 10-12"... maybe... I am still going to build the doubler but I'll use that on the next project... Possibly reviving the old beat-up 78 Ford 4x4.. ;D... But that Soley depends on how dead the transplanted 460 motor is... SOoo... this Jeep will have a Built AMC 360, a Nicely moded TH350 that should launch the heads of the unexpected riders into the back seat... (wait, there is no seat... only a fuel cell and a radiator/fan)... a Ford NP205... Yes, a GM TH350 to a FORD NP205 , a Ford Front D60 and a Chevy FF 14-Bolt... lol. What a pig!!! ;D... I guess things tend to pan out... More to come.... slowly. Well, I went and picked up the other Ford NP205 (31 spline)... it's not the nicest looking one but, I'll sort of fix that... (Finally The parts are coming in)... Here are some pics of the Ford NP205 (there might be a couple more where I got this... ... well, now it's time to measure for the custom adapter.... the stub shaft from AA will run me roughly $220... not bad... it's a lot cheaper than the complete adapter... lol.

The transmission parts will arrive shortly.... I decided to order some goods from Advance Adapters... Now the Ford NP205 will bolt up to the GM TH350... Advance Adapters doesn't have a specific kit for this but, They do have a kit (P/N 50-6904) that adapts a Ford NP208 to a GM 700R4... The 700R4 has the same rear bolt pattern as the TH350... and the Ford NP208 has a 31 spline input just like the Ford NP205... The 700R4 Kit (P/N 50-6904) comes with a shaft (P/N 50-6900)... which, for my set-up isn't need so AA removed that as well as replaced the mounting hardware... The 700R4 uses metric bolts and the TH350 uses standard bolts... Vic Carroll quoted me for $375 for this set-up... which includes.. The adapter, the spud shaft (27 spline female/31 spline male), bearing and hardware... Not a bad price to pay to run a ford HP front in a lifted Jeep... The AMC 360 ran me a little over $7000... The Three TH350's ran me two cases of yingling beer $30-ish... The TH350 performance parts ran $250... (Already have a NICE manual/reverse valve body in one of the trannies)... Thess " free" trannies turned out to be one present after another)... The AMC 360 to a GM TH350 adapter from Novak-adapters (P/N 437AMC-3) ran $375... The GM TH350 to the Ford NP205 adapter ran $375... The Ford NP205 ran.... well, that's a secret ... The Ford HP D60 ran $800... New parts for the HP D60 ran $200... FF 14 Bolt ran $250... FF 14 Bolt disk brake conversion ran $250... 8 lug 12 Bolt 2 piece beadlocks ran $200... (which I am looking at getting rid of... $150 takes them) Goodyear 37" Military Tires $500 Gaskets/bearings/seals/cleaners/primer/paint etc etc... who knows, the amount is still increasing. I still have to get the break lines... and other odds and ends from the JY in-order to stop really good... no slush brakes... I still have to get the shocks/steering/fabricate the mounts for the tranny/t-case... going with a dual mount... I still have to ru nthe fuel lines and hard pipe the 2nd radiator in the back etc... So needless to say I still have a lot to do... But, I'll be taking leave again here real soon... especially when the parts start stacking up... lol. While I was on deployment my buddy mike built a set of axles for me which he is buying off of me seeing that I'm not using them and they're sitting on his axle stands in one of his bays.. ... But... that means $2000 more for parts... ;D I'm still going to build the doubler I'll use some of that money to purchase the $700+ adapter... that's all for now... more to come UP-DATE: The performance tranny parts are in .... I got my spindle socket it... I have everything laid out and almost ready to go for this weekends tranny build... Waiting on new gaskets for the Ford NP205... They should be here in a couple days... and then she'll be ready... primer/paint go on tonight....

The tranny has been painted Orange... When I got this tranny it still had a few patches of the old Orange paint and seeing that I had a can left I cleaned her up and painted it... It looks pretty good, I'll get a few shots tomorrow. I have replaced all of the internals, everything was with-in specifications and rotated smoothly... I'll button the lower half up tomorrow after duty... I'll snap some pics... She's buttoned up... In the Master Racing Overhaul kit they supply you with an additional steel and friction plate... This is mainly for Racing applications... in-order to fit the extra plates you have to machine the direct clutch piston... with the four steel and four friction plates I was with-in the tolerance specified... I measured the friction and steel plate for a total of .170"... I will machine the direct clutch piston .170"... I'll fit it up and double check my clearances I'm shooting for roughly .050"... this will give me a tighter/quicker shift and adding to the gripping power.... This tranny is going to be a monster that was built cheaply!!! In about two weeks I should have everything under the Jeep... Once everything is under it I'll run to the Junk Yard grab 2 or 3 drive shafts and make one... Eventually I'll order a couple... But, at the moment I'm trying to pinch pennies on the " can do" Items... The T-case is ready for some color, I should be able to get to that tomorrow... I'm going with Black for the casing and the covers will be Gray... Nothing exciting going on just making preps for a smooth install. (I didn't get around to the T-Case yet)... The worst is yet to come... Cleaning the garage, mainly the concrete... I have some decent degreaser but, scrubbing the concrete always sucks... lol. Here are some pics, nothing exciting.... This is the direct clutch piston that needs to be machined to fit the extra friction and steel plate. i7.photobucket.com/albums/y293/Fifesamcjeep82/100_1084.jpg[/IMG]Hopefully this picture is good enough where you can see the mark... approximately .130" will be removed. More to come soon... ;D I ended up machining 2 direct clutch disks... roughly .170" per.... Which gave me roughly .050" clearance with the added plates.... The tranny to t-case adapter arrived... I like it... tomorrow I should be able to bolt up the T-case etc...

I got bored and I think I have figured out how to do some video stuff... If I did it correctly You all should be able to hear the AMC 360 idling... The idle needs a little adjustment but, here ya go. (fingers crossed that this works) s7.photobucket.com/albums/y293/Fifesamcjeep82/?action=view¤t=100_1091.flvCurrently I am making preparations to remove the tub and install the Th350/Ford NP205... as my 2800 stall converter arrived. The stall is actually lower than the peak torque rpm but... this will make it a little more "road worthy"... As for the D60 front, I still have to cut the long side tube roughly 5 1/2" to 6"...... In-order to run the H1's without issue I will have to use either 2 1/2" or 3" wheel spacers... No biggie. Next on the purchase list is the high steer... Some DOM, more heim joints and I have to pay out for some welding skills for my custom tranny/t-case skid/mount..... I need to get another welder!!!
