Ok-drum roll. Jeep arrives Norm (our new Prez) is one stand-up guy. 14 hour round-trip without blinking an eye. That's hardcore! (sorry bad pic Norm!) It's never good when you have to winch off the trailer Nice metal flakes with oil! Hey that's a spider gear! Is that a spider gear wedged into the carrier?! By golly it is! Ok guys and gals-it ain't carnage until it affects forward motion. This did. Sheared front axleshaft yoke ear pics to follow...please check the "wanted to buy"section! I'll be posting needed parts in a few minutes. ;D That scrambled mess used to be a u-joint!

I am just overwhelmed by all the help and responses.. You guys are the greatest. My brother and I couldn't believe that some1(our newly elected Pres) drove to Hickory, N.C. at the drop of a dime, and give us a lift home. And well Dave, and every1 that had contributed resources, and everything.. Thank you...

Wow, actually blew out the side of the carrier. Nice! I'm betting a small stress fracture that started on a wheeling weekend and grew via fatigue. Does the metal at the break look something like beach erosion, with little wave lines starting from a small nick somewhere? If so, it was metal fatigue. If the surface of the break is a little granular rather than nice and smooth, more like about 120-300 grit sandpaper, then it was a rapid break, and that's a bit strange. Big quick breaks like that usually happen right when it's overstressed, not a month later under extremely light load. Shame you're not doing an 8.8 swap. I've got a fair number of 8.8 parts laying around that I won't be using for a few months, if you needed internals in a hurry.

Hey Chuck! Pretty much looks like they just blew up, although I'm sure it was due to previous stressing. Looks like we're going to score front and rear Rubicon housings and build those up. Not a whole lot to be gained from the front, except bigger ring gear set up and inner spline count I believe. Thoughts are welcome!

Wasn't someone on the board the other day selling a rear 8.8 already set up for a TJ? Or a friend of a board member selling, at least? That may be quicker to acquire, and the 8.8 is a little stronger than the 44. I've got a spare 31 spline 8.8 LSD waiting to get rebuilt to go in the Mustang in a couple of months, but I can snag another one from UWI. Or, I still have the original open carrier from the Bronco in good condition if Jay wants to go lunchbox locker, which I would think to be strong enough for 35's on a Jeep.

Found that post I was referring to. I know someone with an 8.8 for sale that has 4.56, then you would only need to regear the front 30 plus you would get rid of the 35. 8.8s allready set up for a TJ BEN

How much? We're not 100% on anything yet, just sure we're going to upgrade at least the rear. Lunchbox is good for rear. Have the axle tubes been welded so the center doesn't spin?
