Here's the progress made today- Stripping 8.8-4.10 and Trac-loc coming out for Detroit and 4.88's-anybody need the 4.10's and Trac-loc? Brand new 0 miles ;D Ring gear bolts make good pry points-don't forget to put a rag in the pinion/ring gear so it doesn't spin! Preparing to weld tubes- Welded tubes, each side has about 15 separate welds alternating 180 and left side to right side-that was fun. How's your arms guys?! Tomorrow it gets cleaned, painted, and locker gets mated up with ring gear and possibly begin gear set-up...Jim you in? See ya early Jay!

Welcome to my world. Glad you had fun! We don't need to hunt bearings cuz the master install has them included. We'll make set-up bearings out of the old ones. I'll be ready to go at 9, so whenever you can get over is good...we're going to have to pick up an engine stand for when my 351w comes in tomorrow as well. ;D Here's Friday's progress- Pulling carrier bearing- Dremeling a bearing for use as set-up bearing- Ain't it purty! Gears will be set up Monday... Monday- dowels for ring gear alignment to locker- Jim helping out with making preload fixture- Torquing ring gear bolts- Backlash- Pattern- Final pinion install- Not all inclusive to steps involved! Word of advice-forget the factory shims. They're cast and don't appreciate being beat on. Just measure them out and replace with the ones in the kit as they have a nice little step to retain the paper-thin shims and they're steel not that potted c#$p.

That's looking good! What did you end up using for filler on the tube welds, high nickel or stainless? I thought about welding mine up while I had the rest of the truck down, but right now I just want the thing back together -- I can always take it back apart this summer.

Used stainless. Seemed to do ok, I went a little light on the heat (paranoid about warping!) but inner tube indicates good enough heat range (light heat discoloration and even all the way around) so we'll see. It's not a TIG job but I doubt it'll spin! Could have been prettier with a tad more amps, little bit more flow-out. If I can find someone to check alignment I'll probably get a couple junk axles and practice different techniques with heat and polarities and have them align-checked to see what works and doesn't work ie; what warps the housing.

Although it was waaaaay to l8 to work on it( my bad, Dave).. Fatigue set in about 10 pm. Budweiser time after 11 pm. But, definately something I am glad to have learned. Dave and Billy put in over 13 hours on it yesterday, Whew. Thanks, guys....
Oh yeah, that 1st shim cracked in 3 pieces and shot out a few feet.(p.o.s.) But, I feel confident it was a sucessful procedure.

Uhhh, Billy went home a few times- I had Wendy's. Thanks for that break! Yea it was a marathon session. I need to bend new brake lines for the housing and then we can put it in. It's ready other wise. Oh and I made a lower cover plate stiffener out of 3/16" steel until you can get a full-blown HD cover. Shouldn't peel on ya! ;D
