Been doing a little research, scratching the surface on maybe getting a tow rig/DD in the near future. Googling the Duramax, I am seeing around 20 on avg for DD, and 14/15 while towing.....what are some of the real world numbers for people in the club? I would like to hear low 20's on avg from you guys, that would definitely help the argument for selling the car and picking up a truck! Thanks

not to bash chevy to much since I love chevys, but most of the reviews I have read say that the duramax is a great engine and the allison tranny is awesome, but with problems... the injectors are know to be faulty and are costly to replace ($500 a piece not including labor) and the engines burn about a qt of oil every 100 gals of fuel. I love this site, gives you a bit more info on real consumers feel about thier trucks. Do yourself a favor and look into a 2003 or later Dodge Ram with the Cummins in it. autos.msn.com/home/used_research.aspx?src=LeftNav

You should shoot swampercj a pm and ask him about his mileage with his Duramax.

What year Duramax were you interested in? My #'s are 19.4 combined city / highway, 11.5 - 12 towing (7000 lb enclosed trailer). That's with an '05 LLY Duramax. The pre 2004.5 (LB7) Duramax seems to have slightly higher mpg numbers, but did have injector issues as noted by another poster. Apparently, GM believes the injector issues on the LB7 to be related to inadequate fuel filters, and has issued a "recall" on the fuel filters to replace them with the newer design now used on the LLY. They have also extended the warranty on the injectors on some of those earlier models to 200,000 miles, vs. the standard 100,000 mile engine warranty.
Note that fuel mileage on these engines is heavily influenced by engine speed. Peak torque for the LLY occurs at approximately 1700 - 1800 rpm, or apx. 60 mph, and that is where it will get it's best mileage. The mileage will drop off significantly as engine speed increases.

For those who may have interest, GM has just extended the 200,000 mi. warranty on the LB7 engine injectors to include the 2003 - 2004's:

Service Engine Soon (SES) Light On, DTCs P0087, P0093, P1093, Low Power, No Start, Hard Start, Fuel in Crankcase (Replace All Injectors -- New Strategy for High Fuel Return Rates) 2003-2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2003-2004 Chevrolet Kodiak C4500/C5500 Series 2003-2004 GMC Sierra 2003-2004 GMC Topkick C4500/C5500 Series with 6.6L Duramax™ Diesel Engine (VIN 1 -- RPO LB7) The 6.6L Duramax™ Diesel Injectors warranty covers the condition described above for the period of 7 years or 320,000 km (200,000 mi), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership. At first blush, the price strikes me as being a tad high, based on the saturated market for used vehicles, but, not by an awful lot. It does look like a nice truck. I'd suggest checking Kelly Blue Book and Edmunds on the internet, and maybe have your banker give you the current NADA values. Not sure what that was that was once installed in the dash. If you look at the truck, drive it, and are still interested, it might be worth your while to go here: dieselplace.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=72and ask one of the guys there to run a VIN check for you. That will give you an idea of what (if any) warranty issues the truck has had.

Actually, Edmunds shows the private party value pretty close to that price. I think I'd still check the current NADA. Since that is a GM dealer, if you are interested in the truck after you look it over, ask them to run the VIN and show you the warranty history (as well as any outstanding recalls).

Wow, well Lyle with that warranty I would rather have a chevy than a dodge anyday. But I didnt want to deal with the hassles of the injectors. since that seems to be resolved... I might just look elsewhere....

Getting back to fuel milage with the Duramax...My 05 crew cab dually with 10,000 miles stinks. i get an average of 12.6 to 13.2MPG around town/highway, the best I've ever gotten was 16.1 for 60 miles at 60 mph. I was trying hard to see what I could get for fuel milage. I had the cruise set at 60 and didn't touch it. The worst was 10.2 towing the Jeep up to Crozet. The dealership said it might be a computer programing issue...It goes in next week for another program check, since it surges just off idle in drive. I love the truck but for fuel milage it isn't my old Dodge. With the price of fuel now I could replace a tranny a year on my old Dodge and still be ahead of the game! My 98 Dodge 2500 quad cab got 21-22 empty highway at speeds up to 75 mph, to 17 intown driving or towing 7500lbs up to Paragon. I really hate my truck just because of the fuel milage. It's quick as hell from stop light to stop light!
If I got anything close to 20mpg daily driving and 15 towing I'd jump up and down for joy and recommend the truck to everyone! But for now stay the heck away from GM! Go Dodge if you can live with a extended cab and go Ford if you need a crew cab. Just my thoughts! Scott

Scott... there's got to be something wrong with your Duramax. What you're getting around town / highway is about what I'm getting towing the enclosed trailer with the TJ in it! The DRW shouldn't make THAT much difference. Are you running any kind of tuner or larger tires? Take it to the dealer and make them fix it. Here's my mileage numbers if you want it for reference: webpages.charter.net/lylep/2500HDMileage.htmRegarding the surging, I copied the following off another board: this is called surging and yes its been talked about tons. There is a PCM update that fixes it. Take a trip to the dealer and have them update your computer with the TechII. Tell them you have low-rpm surging. The internal number of the fix is PIP3129B
Others mention using a lubricity additive to cure low rpm surge (ie: Primrose 402 or Red Line Diesel catalyst). Hope the info helps, and let us know what the dealer does for you. Lyle

No everything is stock. The computer fix just came out I just have to find the time and weather to turn it in to the dealer. I'll be driving the jeep no top or doors! They have to fix the hood on it this time too, since they dented and scratched it! I know everyone seems to get decent mileage but me. Thanks for the info Lyle, I'll bring it up at the dealer next week.
