How much empty and what is the length and gvwr? I'm looking at an extendable low boy car hauler that extends from 26' to 48'. The guy says it weighs 4,000# empty, but he's not weighed it, that's what's on the title. I might be able to see that since the center section is open. It's a triple axle though. I don't know what to think about that. Maintenence costs more, but it will keep some weight off the tongue. It just looks like it's in great shape and he's only asking half of what I've seen these things going for used. What do you think? Too heavy? Good deal? I won't notice it, go for it? He's only about 2 hours from me. I'm in no rush at all right now, but I could do this if it is the deal I've been looking for. I can't find any information on these anywhere, never seen them before. Pull the trigger. You can always step up the tow rig. Oh yea, how much for a tow to Crozet?

I actually dropped mine from the truck empty @ Charlie's Truckstop. I believe it weighed 4100lbs empty. It's a 28' deck with 8' of 8" channel tongue. The frame is made of 4 pieces of 6" channel and 6" channel cross members. Mine is also open in the center, but only has 2 7k axles. I think the one in Richmond would weigh more than 4k empty, but not too much more to spoil a deal like that!

Gary's 37 footer weighed 5500 with the slide in camper on it. Ryan's weighs 4500 IIRC. Mine is in the 4500-4700 range, but I have not weighed it by itself now that it has 2 spares and a bunch of extra tie down gear on board.

I recon this is in the ballpark then and isn't excessively heavy. Thanks.

I'm thinking about leaving tomorrow about 11:30 to go look at it. I won't be bringing it home though, I don't have a hitch installed yet even. I talked to him today about it, I'm not sure now about it because he says he made a mistake on it lengths and it only collapses to 38' and extends to 48'. 38' is a little more than I wanted to tag around, but he also said he's negotiable on the price. Maybe I could always shorten it up???

Wow, that's a lot of trailer Keith. I had to chuckle, you had a ride home on my gooseneck and now you're ready for one too. But, a 38 - 48 footer, hmmm.
I told you about my tri-axle trailer I had before, I didn't like it. It seemed like I was going to rip a tire apart everytime I was making a short turn (especially loaded on pavement). Maybe that is why I ate up tires. Also, if you look at this trailer, find out if the axles are torsion or leaf springed. Torsion doesn't distribute weight well. Many places we drive in to has rough terrain, it can be tough on tires if one has to carry the weight of three.
My last concern would be potential tounge weight. Sure you can put air bags on the truck, but then you start pushing over the weight limit your SRW truck tires can safely carry.
So, having read back over this, I'm not sounding very positive. I think it's too much trailer, unless you're putting it behind a new F450 dually.

I think you might be right, no matter how cheap it is, it doesn't matter if I'm miserable towing it. I was actually thinking I might remove one of the axles, and just keep it at the short length. But being as the short length is 38', I may need to keep looking. I know I could pick it up for about $2200 though. I don't really know what it would take to lop off 8' or if that would be possible easily.
Aren't all of the low boys leaf spring axles?

Keith, Man that's a lot of trailer. I would be hesitant to drag it around loaded with a SRW set up, but it looks like a good deal. My only other concern would be the total length of the truck/trailer once you're hooked up and ready to run down the road. VA has a limit somewhere around 65 ft, and a picky trooper good give you a hard time about it. The actual length limit is in the VA codes somewhere. I had to check to be sure MINE is legal. Biggest thing I guess, is just to be sure you don't over do it as far as the tow rig. The extend-able trailers are nice when you need to drag three Wranglers or other short wheelbase rigs home-provided you have the tow capacity to to that. The F-450 sounds like a good plan, but not entirely necessary. A DRW 350 or 3500 would be fine dragging that thing. I'd just watch the GVW potential. Whatever it would come out to when it's loaded and ready to roll. I have the plans for a 26' tandem axle goose neck, and curb weight on it is listed at 4100, with an empty tongue weight of just over 1700 pounds. It's really gonna depend on what you want to do with it, and if you have enough truck to drag it. I'm no expert.....just a farm kid who's been dragging these things for what seems like forever. Well I'd never try to tag along 3 rigs with my srw f350. I'd be allright with it at 38' as far as length is concerned, i think. I'm not buying a different truck guys, I just got the 350 licensed!!
That's why I'm asking here, for some opinions. I just want it to work, but I dunno. I only get one shot at this. I remember thinking Boucher's trailer was obnoxiously long, I don't know how I'd feel about something 6' longer.

Now I never towed a gooseneck trailer so I can't speak on its characteristics, but do know that 32' behind you can be a little challenging. I really don't think that the quote of 4,000lbs is correct. Craigs trailer as a tag along was 4,000lbs and the one your looking at has a lot more metal and axles to it.......But, yeah Craig I really like how you have your trailer set up..... tim

Keith, the weight maybe closer to 5.5 or 6K. At $2200, is it worth buying and reselling if it is too big? Do you have the space to store it?

Reselling stuff is a pain and sometimes it's hard to break even. I do have a spot to store it though, I hear there's room on Bay Circle. I got a friend in Holland that will keep it for me. Better than paying storage fees or fines from a HOA. A 28 footer would be perfect for what I want to do. I can't even find a low boy at Kaufman that's 28', they're all 32' or bigger. Craig's is perfect. I think you guys are right and I'll keep looking, I don't want to let the price get me in to something I will regret.
